Example

Splitting $2,000 between incomes of $60,000 and $40,000, the first person pays $1,200 and the second pays $800. An equal split would be $1,000 each.

How the rent split calculator by income works

Each person pays the same share of the rent as their share of the combined income: your rent = total rent × your income / total income.

Someone earning 60% of the household income pays 60% of the rent. Everyone ends up spending the same percentage of their income on housing.

Use the same kind of income for everyone, either all before tax or all after tax. Any period works as long as it is the same for each person.

Common questions

Is splitting by income fairer than splitting equally?

It depends on what you agree. An equal split treats the home as a shared purchase. A split by income equalises the burden. Couples often prefer splitting by income, and flatmates often split equally or by room size.

Should we use income before or after tax?

After tax reflects what each person can actually spend, so it is usually the fairer basis when tax rates differ a lot.

Can I use this for other shared bills?

Yes. Enter the total of any shared cost, such as utilities, groceries or a holiday, in place of the rent.
