Discount Calculator
Enter the original price and the discount. You get the sale price, the saving and the final price with tax if you add a tax rate.
| Discount | You save | Sale price |
|---|---|---|
| 10% | $8 | $72 |
| 20% | $16 | $64 |
| 30% | $24 | $56 |
| 40% | $32 | $48 |
| 50% | $40 | $40 |
Example
25% off $80 saves $20, so the sale price is $60.
How the discount calculator works
The saving is the original price multiplied by the discount percentage. The sale price is the original price minus the saving: sale = price × (1 − discount%).
Sales tax is applied to the discounted price, which is how it works in most places.
Two discounts in a row do not add up. 20% off followed by another 10% off is 28% off in total, because the second discount applies to the reduced price.
Common questions
How do I work out a discount in my head?
Find 10% by moving the decimal point one place to the left, then scale it. For 30% off 80, 10% is 8, so 30% is 24 and the price is 56.
How do I find the original price from a sale price?
Divide the sale price by one minus the discount. An item costing 60 after 25% off was 60 divided by 0.75, which is 80.
Is a bigger percentage always a better deal?
Only if the original price is honest. Compare the final price with what other shops charge for the same item.
